Good morning everyone!
So, every year here at the Berry farm, Frank and I like to give back and help a damsel in distress to help put us in the Christmas spirit. I had told my best friend about an idea of adopting a dog, either from a kill shelter or how ever we could find one, and find it the perfect home for this years project! After that conversation I went about my day, and the next day, not really thinking too much more about it. As I was coming home from running and grabbing Frank I lunch, I see this little dog in the woods cowering each time a car would drive by. Of course, I stop. She was terrified. At first I thought to myself that there was no way this dog was going to let me catch it..then I remembered I had food in my car. With a little coaxing with french frys I could get close enough to grab her. It was pouring rain and she was sopping wet. I stuck her in the back of my car and she immediately laid down and was terrified. I made that phone call to Frank “Ugh..babe, sorry it’s taken me so long but..I kinda picked up a dog..” Frank is very use to these kinds of phone calls so naturally he said, “Well, I’ll see ya when you get here.” We get back to the farm and Frank is waiting for us on the front porch. I get her out of the car and she runs straight to him, tail wagging. For some reason…animals seem to like him way more than me..not something I love to admit but it’s true.
I make an appointment for her to go to the vet within the hour. She checked out all clear and got all her shots and everything she needed to be up to date. Come to find out, she was only 6 months old! She’s just a baby! Yay! I felt so happy! I got her home, gave her an intense bath and with all the excitement she passed out on the couch! That’s when I said to my self…She’s a lucky Penny.
Next move was to introduce her to the other dogs…I can’t say that went super well. She had NO idea what playing was…like at all. She was very defensive of Frank and I, as if she had to protect us. She did not understand what the other dogs were doing…at all. Because I am an extremely amazing planner..I had to run off the Charleston for work within the first two days she was here..Frank really appreciated that!
When I got back home two days later, Penny had changed. She was comfortable, trusting, and so very hopeful. I feel as if I have a good amount of experience working and being around dogs…I have to say though, Penny was so different. She looked at us with so much hope, trust, and love. She looked to us for comfort, for encouragement, and understanding. You could see if in her eyes that she genuinely did not understand what this life was all about. Next thing you know..Penny and my puppy, Hank, were inseparable. Literally. They eat basically standing on top of each other, they play NONSTOP, and they take naps on the couch together! She acts, now, as if she has never met a stranger and everyone is her best friend. It’s pretty cool. Not only to have helped this little doll but to watch her gain so much trust and understanding that we were here to help her. Cool stuff!
She has found the most perfect home in the world with a friend who I know will fall in love with her each and every day just as we did. Penny is one of kind and has brought so much love and compassion into our house and we will be forever thankful! We love you sweet Penny!
